Giving Tuesday is six months away. Which means most Catholic organizations are not thinking about it yet.
That is the problem.
By October, when development staff finally turn their attention to end-of-year giving, there is not enough time to do Giving Tuesday well. So they send three emails, post on Instagram the week before, and hope the general goodwill of the day carries them to a respectable number. Sometimes it does. More often, they leave a significant amount of money on the table — money that could have been raised with a six-month runway and a real plan.
This post is for the organizations willing to start now.
Why Giving Tuesday is different for Catholic nonprofits
Giving Tuesday is the single best day of the year to turn a warm subscriber into a first-time donor. It is also a crowded field. On that Tuesday in December, your donors will receive appeals from secular nonprofits, Catholic organizations, their alma maters, their parish, and every cause they have ever clicked on. The fact that it is Giving Tuesday is not a reason to give to you specifically.
What makes someone choose your organization over everything else in their inbox?
- A loyalty and understanding that has been earned over months of content consumption.
- A campaign that connects their dollars to a specific, tangible expression of your mission—one that is so clear, so compelling, and so well-timed that saying yes feels easy.
These things do not get built in three weeks. It takes the six months you have right now.
The four-part playbook
Based on the experience of nearly 20 years running campaigns inside Catholic organizations, the approach that consistently produces record-breaking Giving Tuesday results has four components. Each one matters. Together, they are difficult to beat.
1. A creative campaign that connects money to mission
Generic fundraising appeals—”support our mission,” “help us do more”—do not move people on Giving Tuesday. What moves people is specificity: a program, a person, an outcome. Your campaign needs a central idea that answers the question every donor is quietly asking: What exactly happens when I give? How will my donation change lives and bring people closer to Christ?
If you are raising for your general operating fund, that does not mean you are out of options, it means you need to find a creative lens. What is the most compelling expression of your mission right now? What story can you tell that makes the abstract concrete? A well-positioned general fund campaign can outperform a narrowly scoped one if the framing is right.
Start here. Everything else you build in the next six months flows from this central idea.
2. High-quality video and photo assets
A dedicated landing page for your Giving Tuesday campaign should do one thing: convert visitors into donors. That requires creative that earns attention and builds trust quickly.
Video is the most effective tool for explaining mission impact in a short window. A two-minute video that shows your work, features the people your mission serves, and makes a clear appeal can be the difference between a visitor who gives and one who instantly closes the tab.
Photography that tells a story—not stock images, but real photos from your mission—does similar work.
These assets take time to produce and budget to produce well. Six months gives you time to plan the shoot, find the right people to feature, and deliver something worth watching. These photos and videos can even be user-submitted, as long as they tell a compelling story and show impact…but you need time to ask for and acquire them.
3. A real matching gift
Matching gifts work. The psychology of doubling one’s impact is well-documented, but in the Catholic fundraising context it carries particular weight: donors who give to Catholic apostolates tend to be motivated by the sense that their gift matters. A match makes that tangible.
The key word is real. A matching gift should be funded—by one major donor, a small group of leadership donors, or your board members—before you announce it. An unfunded match (or a match with a hazy source) is a liability, not an asset. A real match, properly promoted, creates urgency and drives higher average gift sizes.
If you do not have a donor ready to fund a match, the next six months is the time to have that conversation. A leadership donor who gives $10,000 to fund a match can unlock multiples of that in Giving Tuesday revenue. That is a conversation worth having now.
4. A lead generation strategy—starting immediately
This is the piece most organizations skip, and it is the most important one.
Here is the logic: your best Giving Tuesday donors are people who have been on your email list long enough to trust you, understand your mission, and feel connected to your work. A subscriber who joined your list in September and receives their first ask in November has no relationship with you yet. A subscriber who joined in July and has spent five months seeing your content, learning your mission, and understanding your impact is ready to give.
Six months gives you exactly enough time to run a paid lead generation campaign, build a warm audience, nurture them through your regular communications and value-added resources, and bring them into Giving Tuesday primed to respond.
This is not a small opportunity. Our team’s prior work inside Catholic organizations has added more than 25,000 new leads to a single ministry’s email list through paid social in under a year—and has generated more than 900 new leads from just $450 in Facebook ad spend. The economics of Catholic lead generation through digital advertising can be remarkably favorable when the creative and targeting are right.
Incidentally, White Tree offers a distinct lead gen advantage to its clients—a list of 150,000 warm Catholic contacts that can be used to create a lookalike audience and navigate Meta’s restrictions on targeting by religious interests. That means your ads will be more likely to reach Catholic audiences, bringing down your cost-per-lead and filling your list with valuable prospects.
Every person you add to your list today is a potential first-time donor on Giving Tuesday. Every month you wait is a month of relationship-building you cannot recover.
What this has produced
The playbook above is not theoretical. It is what our team has executed, repeatedly, across Catholic organizations of different sizes and missions.
The results from our team’s prior work:
- More than $113,000 raised from email alone in a single Giving Tuesday campaign (843 gifts)
- Giving Tuesday results increased by 1,000% over two years at one Catholic institution after implementing a systematic lead generation and campaign strategy
- $354,000 raised in a single Giving Tuesday—44% growth over the prior two years—by combining strong creative, a funded match, and a cultivated email list
These are not outliers. They are what happens when the ingredients are assembled with enough time to do the work properly. The White Tree team can bring this experience and expertise to your Giving Tuesday efforts.
What happens when you don’t plan
The alternative is not “a smaller Giving Tuesday.” It is a Giving Tuesday that trains your donors to expect less from you.
A generic three-email sequence with no creative campaign, no matching gift, and no new audience tells your donors—implicitly, but clearly—that you did not think this was worth preparing for. Donors who give in that environment may give again. But you will not acquire new donors, you will not break records, and you will not build the kind of campaign momentum that carries into January and beyond.
Giving Tuesday is the best day of the year to turn loyal subscribers into first-time donors and to ask more of your existing donors. That opportunity exists once a year. Treat it accordingly.
