It’s easy to dismiss public relations and media placements as a bad investment.
It takes a lot of time and relationship-building.
It’s hard to track a clear ROI without a trackable link.
It can feel archaic when you’re working with legacy media like radio stations, broadcast outlets, and even (gulp!) newspapers.
But what if one of those media placements gained you a $25,000 investment in your project?
That’s exactly what happened to one of our clients this week.
We have been managing media relations for Industrious Family Films, a home-grown Catholic film and entertainment company run by a family in Idaho, that is operating with the gusto of The Little Engine That Could.
The entire point of the engagement was to spread the word about their current film project—Fabiola—to attract new investors and reach their production budget goal.
Our media pitch gained them quite a few placements in some prominent Catholic and secular outlets—EWTN, The Catholic Morning Show, Wake Up!, Spirit Mornings, and The Blaze.
Yesterday they shared the great news that someone who read the Blaze article pledged $25k toward the film and is sharing the article with his network.
We’re so happy for them, and hope that more people will choose to support their work through this media exposure.
While you could argue that this is an outlier success story, good press coverage has many other tangible benefits:
Press hits build your website’s domain authority if it is linked to from a prominent media site.
Media interviews are easily re-purposable social, website, and email content. Outlets will usually give you the raw audio or video for your own remixing use or permission to reprint at least part of an article.
Media coverage in a respectable outlet tends to become a top search result for your brand and builds your reputation in AI search results, too.
Media interviews help you clarify your message and communicate it effectively.
Press begets more press. Being a good guest or providing a good story makes a media outlet more likely to feature you again. And when you’re featured by one, that usually makes others interested in featuring you as well.
It’s difficult to track the full 1:1 results of an effective PR campaign (and the results/reach are admittedly often overstated by many PR firms), but when it is part of a larger marketing strategy, the amplification of media serves your broader awareness efforts splendidly—and sometimes gets your mission in front of the right person who can write you a big check.
